4th Day

Learning Points:

Assessing Classroom Enviroment

Today we discover in detail what WIHIC is all about, how to administer survey, prepare data entry using the Excel spreadsheet and SPSS and how to prepare a report.

Quantitative - through questionaire and surveys
Qualitative - through focus group interview

How to assess LE?

1. Must be rationale.
2. Establish the research tools.
3. What is the Design and Methodology.
4. Establish findings and write report.

Group Project

Today we did a group project in Assessing Learning Environment. After doing the class survey, we proceeded with the data entry. It gets harder when we start to use the SPSS and prepare the report. Though I can understand what is being done at that point of time. I dont think I can remember all the processess if I were to do it again on my own. Nevertheless, found out that Faiz studies statistics during his Uni days. Here is someone who can help me on this.

EURO 2008

Stayed up in the early hours to watch the Portugal and Germany's match. End to end stuff. Though Portugal attacked with flair, their defence was a let down. Germaany once again proofed to be more clinical in their finishing by scoring 3 goals.

3rd Day

Learning Points:

Some basic terms used when assessing LE are Mean, Median and Mode.

When presented with data collated from surveys and questionaires, we need to question its relevance.

When modifying LE instruments;
1. Avoid re-inventing the wheel.
2. Ensure that the context is right.
3. Remember that the existing instruments are validated.

Questions that are set in the survey should;
1. Talks about one issue/ point only.
2. Short and easy to understand.
3. Correct target audience.
4. Have both positive and negative stance.
5. Avoid using the word 'Seldom', 'Always. Use instead 'Agree', 'Disagree'.

We practiced some questionaires using the FAOCC instrument. Noted that there are differrences in the answers that I gave in the 'preferred' form and the 'actual' form.

Learnt how to do Podcast. Will share it with my kids tonight.

Discussion on What Makes A School Environment Positive and Negative
All 4 groups presented their views on the the 3 case studies. I disagreed that family income can effect the motivation of students to study. I felt that it is the parents participation or involvement that effect the students motivation. I also agreed with one of my course mates that the survey done on the 3 schools should involve the other stake holders ie students, parents and the support staff. The conclusion derived from the survey of the 3 schools seemed to indicate that the principal is the root cause in creating a negative learning environment.

Firefox v Exporer
Is Firefox better that Explorer? Apparently, that is what James Peh said so. Hmm......will verify this claim tonight.

Rubriks for blogs??
Yes, there is such a thing. Why do we have to evaluate everything that we do? I'm not saying that we should not evaluate what we have done, but there are some things that are not meant to evaluated.

2nd Day

Learning Points
Did a group research on Barry J Fraser. Put all together on a mind manager-interesting. This is something new that I learnt today. Other groups covered bio-data on Murray, Lewin, Moos and Walberg. We also covered topics on what and how to assess learning environment.

Cant believe that you can do you PHD on learning environment. Seems like a simple matter to understand but I guess why I find it not a difficult concept to grasp is that it has been made simpler by the these people.

Instruments such as surveys and questionaires were discussed this afternoon. Really pity my trainees back at work who have to do a 600+ questionaires when they were about to complete their course. Just realised that there are too many surveys and questionaires done at my workplace but we seldom get to know the analysis for these surveys.

Went for coffee at one of the residence after lunch. Good walk. Noticed that there are durian trees in NIE!

About the graze on my car.................
Tried washing it off last night. Looks ok but can still feel the rough and scratched surface on my bumber. Contemplating whether should I re-spray the bumper.

First Day

What a way to start the first day of class!
Enroute to NIE, I saw a motorcyclist crashing into a van. Luckily he was not seriously hurt. Then after dropping off my wife at Lakeside MRT station, I accidentally grazed the car in front of me. Still awaiting the cost of damage for that!
Now for LE.......
Learning Points
LE can effect learning outcomes. Community, structure, perspective of LE and human behaviour affect learning outcomes. Internally, the learner is influenced by his beliefs, values, perceptions, motivation, needs. Externally, the learner is influenced by the structure, peers, society.
Our teaching style can also influnce learning environment. Too strict, can lead to ineffective faciliatation and less feedback but with greater control of the lesson conducted.
The 3 key concepts are:
a. Personal
b. Personal Needs
c. Behaviour
Note: I tend to be less strict, very commanding and laissez-faire (depending on situatuions) definitely not indiferent.
